Meet our previous scholarship recipients, Andrea is currently working for Getty images and Nathan is building a successful freelance career as a visual journalist.

“I’m deeply thankful to have received the IMMJ scholarship. Moving to China, alone, seemed scary at first, but attending the IMMJ was a wonderful experience. I joined as a photographer and I left as a multimedia journalist, with a deep understanding of the industry and ethical issues, especially important now, in an era where everyone with a smartphone is potentially a journalist. As a foreign student studying journalism in a huge complex country like China has been a great advantage, especially for learning how to report about different cultures without falling into stereotypes. Moreover, the diversity of our class, with both Chinese and foreign students, was paramount in creating a stimulating environment
.” – Andrea Verdelli

“I am incredibly happy to have been a scholarship recipient. It has allowed me to me to take a route that would not otherwise have been financially accessible, and moving to China and studying on the course has enabled me to develop my career as a visual journalist. The experience provided the academic framework, practical skills and freedom to create real-world, in-depth and meaningful projects, whilst living and working in a dynamic, fascinating and complex country. I have been able to develop and work on issues important to me, with a focus on disability, community, identity, and ethnicity.” – Nathan Gibson, UK.
